What is a Casino?
A casino is an establishment for certain types of gambling. It may also refer to an establishment that is integrated with a hotel, restaurant or other type of tourism-related business. A casino may also refer to a place where gambling is legal and the government regulates it. The term is most commonly associated with the United States, where the majority of casinos are located. However, there are many other places where it is legal and where the concept has been established, such as Monte Carlo, Monaco.
In the United States, there are more than 1,000 casinos and gambling is a huge industry that contributes billions of dollars to the economy. Casinos are regulated by state and local laws. Because of their importance to the economy and high profile nature, there is a lot of interest in protecting them from cheating and theft. As a result, there are many security measures in place. These include cameras and specialized departments that monitor activities.
There are three general categories of casino games. Gaming machines, table games, and random number games. Table games, such as blackjack and craps, involve players competing against the house (the casino), usually conducted by employees known as croupiers. Random number games, such as roulette and baccarat, use balls or dice and are generally conducted by a live dealer. Some casinos offer only one category of game while others offer several. Those that specialize in Far Eastern games often offer sic bo, fan-tan, and pai gow.
