What Is a Casino?

A casino is a place where people can gamble and play games of chance. Casinos often feature table games like roulette, poker and blackjack. They may also include video slots and other types of electronic gaming machines. Most casinos also offer a variety of entertainment and dining options. Some also host live entertainment events such as concerts and stand-up comedy shows.

In the United States, Nevada has the largest number of casinos. Many of these are located in the Las Vegas Valley, though there are some in other cities. Some are also in Native American tribal lands.

Because large amounts of money are handled within a casino, there is always the temptation for patrons and employees to cheat or steal. To counter this, casinos employ a variety of security measures. These include cameras throughout the casino and elaborate surveillance systems. Some casinos even have catwalks in the ceiling, which allow surveillance personnel to look down on the casino floor through one-way glass.

The Bellagio in Las Vegas is perhaps the most famous casino in the world, thanks in part to its appearance in the movie Ocean’s 11. It’s also renowned for its opulent furnishings, extravagant decor and breathtaking fountain displays. This is a casino that lives up to its motto, “where art and gambling collide.”
